Overall:
| Q: |
What is Gadget Gangster? |
|
Gadget Gangster is a site for electronics hobbyists to share their projects. We make it easy for designers to share their designs because we handle inventory and fulfillment. For builders, we offer a large selection of unique projects designed by the community. |
| Q: |
What about flashing EEPROM's or firmware? |
|
Our kits come pre-flashed, so designers don't need to worry about ISP headers for their designs & builders don't need to buy chip programming equipment. |
Designers:
| Q: |
I'm a designer. How do I get started? |
|
It's easy; Just register and post your project. We also recommend you pick up a Designers Pack to help you in designing your project. |
| Q: |
Am I giving my project to you? Can I share it somewhere else? |
|
Gadget Gangster makes no claims on your project. You're free to remove your project from Gadget Gangster at any time, post it on another site, or do whatever you want with it. |
| Q: |
My source code! I don't want to share it! |
|
We believe in open source and strongly encourage all projects to be listed under a GPL compliant license. However, you can specify an alternate license in your documentation. |
| Q: |
You don't have the <insert_component_here> needed in my project. |
|
All projects must be designed to be built with the components in our inventory. If the project can't be modified to work with our inventory, let us know and we'll see if we can add the component you need. |
| Q: |
What's my cut of the action? |
|
We offer 20% of your project’s sales price as an incentive for you to design badass projects. We want to sell kits for around twice the cost of components, so your cut ends up being about half of gross margin. |
| Q: |
What do I need to give you to list my project? |
|
- The components you used,
- A description of how you put it together,
- The sourcecode used in your project
That's it! Go here to sign up for an account and begin. |
| Q: |
You don't carry squirt guns. My project requires squirt guns. |
|
It's okay to list a project that requires something we don't carry, like squirt guns. But we want to avoid forcing builders to self-source electronics components like IC's and crystals. |
| Q: |
What happens after I submit my project? |
|
Gadget Gangster reviews to other listed projects to see if it's a straight copy of an existing project. Then, we build it to make sure it works. Approval and posting usually take 2-3 days. We reserve the right to not post your project for any reason. |
| Q: |
Do I need to provide customer support on my project? |
|
No. Our kits are sold to hobbyists 'as is'. However, we offer support forums for your project. You're welcome to check out the support forums and help out, if you'd like. |
| Q: |
I have a badass hobbyist product I'm looking to sell, can you help? |
|
Sure! Get in touch with us. |
Builders:
| Q: |
Where do you get your project ideas? |
|
Our project ideas come from the best designers in the world. They post their projects, we build and test them, and then offer them to you. |
| Q: |
My kit doesn't work! |
|
Gadget Gangster tests each project to make sure it will work when built according to the directions. Chances are you have messed up a solder joint, lifted a trace, or busted a component. A multimeter will assist you in troubleshooting. If you are still certain that your project cannot be built, drop us a line & if we can verify it, we'll take care of you. |
| Q: |
Can I just buy one resistor? |
|
Sure! But not from us. If we proccessed tiny orders like that, we'd have to raise our prices on everything else to cover the cost. There are a few options for getting a single replacement part: Fry's carries electronics components, Digi-key & Mouser, or SparkFun. Or just rip apart an old electronics gizmo and see what's inside. You might get lucky. |
| Q: |
You shorted me a component. |
|
Although recent attempts have shown promise, we are still only human. Sorry! Drop us a note and we'll make it all better. |
| Q: |
What's your customer support policy? |
|
We believe that many Designers will be active in the support forums, but we cannot offer or guarentee any support beyond shipping / packaging / Order taking stuff. |
| Q: |
What about returns? |
|
Returns are accepted for refund only if the project is unopened. Drop us a line and we can take care of you. |
| Q: |
What do I need to put a project together? |
|
A soldering iron, some solder, a little patience, a desoldering tool (I prefer the soldapult, but some prefer the wick), and dikes. While designing projects can be quite challenging — putting them together is like making a cake from mix. |
